Falling for Singing - All About Christina
Ever since she was a little kid, there was no stopping Christina from singing. Using a piece of wood extending from the couch as a microphone, Christina fell in love with singing while watching the Little Mermaid and hearing Jodi Benson’s gorgeous voice. She also literally fell, ending up with a few stitches. Anyway. The VHS tape of her beloved movie barely works now because it’s so worn out and unraveled from constant use.
Christina has a beautiful voice, so no wonder she sings! But, there’s more. Christina draws benefit from singing for her well-being.
“I'm a very emotional person so I feel like singing has been a way to express my emotions in a healthy way.” - Christina
She also feels that during school, singing was a competitive popularity contest. While it was difficult, fortunately, Christina feels like she finally “sings for herself” and does not rely on the validation of others.
Some of Christina’s favorite songs to sing include Always Be My Baby (Mariah Carey), Part of Your World (The Little Mermaid), On my Own (Les Mis), and Power of Love (Celine Dion). Love ballads, especially, are her jam. And while she isn’t the biggest concert goer, she fondly remembers going to HOT 97 concerts in middle school with her friends to check out the popular hip hop songs.
When it comes to her personal philosophy- whether that be applied to her work at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health or her personal life- she advises,
“Don't listen to anyone else's opinions on what your identity should be or what you lack.”
Despite others sometimes projecting their own insecurities, fears, and regrets onto you, Christina urges you to block out all of that noise and listen to your inner voice.
Prepared with her past experiences and current philosophy, Christina is an integral member of Noteworthy Philadelphia. She notices opportunities for growth in this community, like suggesting and learning new songs, and even arranging music! For instance, Christina recently stepped out of her comfort zone to arrange Chandelier by Sia- and she did an incredible job!
At the end of the day, Christina loves her family & friends. At the same time, she emphasizes how important self-love is. She says that,
“Times are hard and that having fun SHOULD be a priority.”
Life is short, so you might as well spend it in your living room singing The Little Mermaid using the couch as a microphone.
